As part of our series of short interviews with candidates for the upcoming local elections, we've been chatting to Diane Bedford, who is running for St Mark's Ward.
Why do you want to be a Councillor?
I want to be a Councillor again as I care deeply for St Mark’s ward. It’s a widespread area with quite a diverse community of young and old. Many residents have issues that I do my best to help them with, and I always ensure I follow them up.
What is your link to Rushmoor and the Ward you’re standing for?
I have lived here since 1967, working in the village, and my daughter has attended the local schools. I attend St Mark’s Church and go to many of their functions. Also, I have been a Governor of two schools and some years ago I was on the Parochial Church Council. Generally I am very pro-active in the Ward events, including the ‘North Camp Matters Community Association’. Finally I have been a Ward Councillor here for 22 years, and Mayor in 2014/15. Rushmoor is part of me, and I simply love what I do!
What issue do you think is most important for your Ward?
The recent road works have at times caused chaos. I have been part of meetings with HCC, plus residents and retailers, to help reduce their impact. Consultations have been ongoing but we are nearly there now – although not an easy route forward, I’ve continued doing my best to ensure their impact is minimised.
Not only do I care for the people here, I am one of them and often have to share their concerns! Many are long term friends, but others are residents who live here and need advice.
What are some of the other developments / changes you’d like to bring to your Ward if elected?
On-street cleaning and fly-tipping is always an ongoing concern. I am in frequent contact with the cabinet member responsible for this, to ensure we are doing everything we can to reduce this type of anti-social behaviour, and to find a long-term solution.
Parking on our narrowest streets is also a real issue, especially now charges may occur for parking on the pavement. I have asked the leader of the council if this can be discussed with some urgency and I have contact with the local PCSOs to share notes and ideas.
I will be restarting my regular walkabouts and chats very soon. This gives me a great opportunity to talk to even more local residents, and get a better understanding of the problems they care about the most. That way, I can ensure my energies are directed towards the things people want resolving the most!
